Job Titles: Junior Art Studio Host, Senior Art Studio Host,  Kiln Room Assistant, Clay Room Assistant, Assistant Studio Manager, Barista

Reports to: Manager

Working Days: Variable. Weekend availability is required of all employees. Fri PM, Sat, and Sun shifts are our “weekend” shifts– employees should expect to be available to work a minimum of four to eight weekend shifts per month. (ie: two Fri PMs + Sundays or Saturdays + two Sundays, subject to studio needs + staff availability)

Working Hours:  12 to 35 hours per week, dependent on employee and/or studio needs. The average shift is 7 hours.

  • Art Studio Host: Two to four shifts per week, usually 12-25 hours.

  • Kiln Room/Clay Room Assistant: Minimum of two shifts per week, up to 30ish hours per week (may be flexible dependent on applicant).

  • Assistant Manager: Minimum of four shifts per week, up to 35 hours per week. Must be available Fri PMs and Sundays, at minimum.

The perfect applicant is someone who uplifts the creative experience for our guests. We are looking for someone who will have the personality, patience, and enthusiasm to thrive in this role. Art experience is NOT necessary! 

Art Studio Host responsibilities include:

  • Greeting, assisting, and serving customers

  • Providing accurate information to visitors on products, techniques, pricing, etc.

  • Providing clear and easy to follow instructions for visitors of varying experience levels and ages

  • Maintaining a clean and organized workspace, including cleaning the studio, tables, and supplies

  • Multi-tasking while working the studio floor and assisting guests, including answering phone calls/texts in a friendly and efficient manner

  • Using Square POS to check out guests and handle cash and credit card transactions accurately and completely

  • Wrapping finished customer orders for pick-up

  • Processing orders, including matching and contacting finished orders

  • Leading and instructing parties and workshops for kids and adults in a confident and efficient manner

  • Putting away inventory and supply orders as they arrive and restocking shelves and supplies as needed.

  • Maintaining a clean and professional appearance

  • Contributing to the team environment at the studio by learning from and effectively communicating with teammates.

  • Running the studio independently, including opening/closing the studio

  • Assessing and prioritizing daily/weekly studio tasks

  • Problem solving and positively resolving customer or studio issues

  • Assisting with employee training

  • Leading events and/or workshops as needed

Kiln Room/Clay Room Assistant responsibilities include all of the above, as well as:

  • Safely operate and monitor kilns, including loading, firing, and unloading ceramic pieces.

  • Manage firing schedules to ensure timely completion of customer orders and studio projects.

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on kilns and other studio equipment to ensure they are in good working condition.

  • Inspect ceramic pieces for defects before and after firing, ensuring high-quality results.

  • Maintain inventory of kiln room supplies, including glazes, kiln shelves, stilts, and other firing accessories.

  • Enforce safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized kiln room to prevent accidents and ensure a safe working environment.

  • Keep detailed records of firing logs, including temperatures, times, and any issues encountered during the firing process

  • Communicate with customers about the firing process, timelines, and any issues with their pottery.

  • Report any issues with kiln performance or ceramic pieces to Studio Manager.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Extended time on feet; must stand, walk, or move extended periods of time, often the entirety of the shift (6-8 hrs).

  • Lifting of boxes and/or supplies between 5-50 pounds (inventory, kiln furniture, clay + glaze, etc.)

  • Stretching, twisting and bending to load/unload kilns or clean.

  • Crouching, stooping or kneeling to stock or retrieve pottery/supplies or clean.

  • Climbing and balancing on ladders/step-stools to retrieve pottery/supplies or clean.

  • Fine motor skills to handle pottery, tools, and supplies.

  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information, both in person and by telephone.

  • Specific vision requirements include close & distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

  • Most work is performed inside the studio and at a moderate noise level. Occasionally employees will assist customers outdoors or work with a tools at a higher noise level.

  • Work is also performed in a kiln room with elevated temperatures and using mechanical parts/items (eg: Kilns, Dremel tools, drills).

Opportunities for Advancement:

For the right individual, Art Studio Host may grow into an Assistant Studio Manager. This role may include a higher level of duties including staff scheduling, event/class development, visual merchandising, and more depending on the skills of the employee. It may involve non-studio floor flex hours depending on duties (ie: setting up displays, designing samples, taking social media photos, posting on social media, graphic design, etc.). If in higher level role, after 1 year with positive performance review, employee may be eligible to attend off-site continuing education events within the ceramics industry.
